The Gathering Storm by Winston S. Churchill

This book was purchased from the Estate auction of Major General Persons in Virginia. He served throughout Eisenhower’s presidency, finally replacing Sherman Adams as Eisenhower’s Chief of Staff in 1958. Persons became a deputy assistant to the president in 1953 and was made assistant to the president in 1958. It is our immense good fortune that a man who presided over this crisis in. He was active in Eisenhower’s campaign for president in 1952. Eisenhower called him back to active duty as a special assistant at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers in Europe from 1951-52.

He served in both World Wars, then worked for the Department of Defense from 1948-1949. Major General Wilton Persons (1896-1977) was an Army officer who entered service in 1917 and rose through the ranks to major general in 1944. The book is in very good condition with minimal wear apart from the dust jacket which is worn with several chips, but it is the correct jacket for the third impression. Volume 1 of Winston Churchills epic retelling of the story of the Second World War, written as a memoir to Churchills own historic contribution to the war. Inscribed by Churchill on the front free endpaper: The first volume of Churchill's memoirs, this selection is broken into two parts. These two factors combine to make The Gathering Storm a unique work. But though The Gathering Storm clearly admires Churchill, it also acknowledges his tyrannical personality and astonishing ego, turning what could be a puff piece into a well-rounded and moving portrait. The movie focuses as much on the enduring relationship between Churchill and his wife, Clementine (Vanessa Redgrave), as his political struggles.
